Outstanding Photographers aims at showcasing some of the finest photographers from around the world and indeed there are some great ones out there. We are now proud to introduce to you our 160th feature, Tom Schwabel (pdxsafariguy), another fine example and among the best in the field. Tom is one of those rare artists that possesses the uncanny ability to pull the viewer into the scene and make you feel as if you were the one snapping the shutter! His pure, unsullied landscapes are both surreal and yet tangible in their breathtaking beauty. Below is but a  sample of Tom’s amazing work.
115 Degrees in the Shade!

Artist’s Statement:

I’ve always been into photography to some extent, starting long ago in a high school darkroom. After a long break from photography, I moved to the Pacific Northwest and the photography bug bit hard. Surrounded by so much natural beauty, it was only natural to begin trying to bring some of that beauty home with me. Now I find myself traveling far and wide to incredible locations, challenging myself to capture them in the best possible manner. Through this combination of travel and photography, I have been fortunate to gain a deeper appreciation of the culturally and naturally diverse world we live in. I find myself inspired by landscapes and seascapes, city skylines and bridges, wildlife, and anything at night. Wherever possible I try to integrate water, light, texture, and motion into my images. I am constantly striving to refine my eye for composition as well as improve my understanding of light and how to control it to achieve the impact I desire. I owe a great debt of gratitude to the incredibly talented folks here on Flickr who have helped and inspired me on my photographic journey. Learning is a lifelong process and I believe, maybe as my own harshest critic, that there is always room for improvement. In that regard, I am on a never-ending quest for that elusive ultimate shot.

mibreit-500x333

Artist’s Statement:

Hello, my name is Michael Breitung and I live in Germany in a small town near Erlangen where I work as software engineer. I have been intensely involved with photography since 2008. I started Landscape photography 3 years ago when I bought my first DSLR. In my day job  I am mostly sitting in front of the PC the whole day so being out in nature, hiking and practicing Landscape photography provides the perfect balance for me.

I love to get up early and hike through the dark to my photo locations. It’s just wonderful to see the world transform from this dark and gloomy place into this colorful wonderland during twilight and sunrise. Another good thing about an early start is that most of the time I have this vista for myself.

When time permits I also like to travel and explore distant places. It’s always a challenge trying to capture the essence of those landscapes because I usually just have a couple of days there and maybe won’t have the chance to come back so soon. But it’s a challenge I like. It helped me to improve my photography more than if I had just gone shooting the same place over and over again.

If there is one thing I’ve learned it’s that sometimes I have only one chance to capture the perfect moment. But if I am able to capture it, those pictures are the most valuable for me.

Because I enjoy hiking, most of my photos are landscapes or motifs from nature. When I am not outdoors to photograph, I also like to experiment in the Studio or take the time to edit my photos. This is often a lengthy process because I aspire always for the best possible result, above all for the images that I offer in the shop as a fine art print.

My personal aim: In my photographs I try to capture the magic of the moment in such a way that each viewer personally  feels present in my landscapes, enjoying each scene the way I experienced it. The main focus then in editing is to reflect the atmosphere of the pictures as I perceived them on-site. This is quite a subjective process, but I hope that my photos come to life for each and everyone.

On a personal note, recently I have been writing regularly for the landscape photography magazine and KWERFELDEIN. I will post the links to the latest articles on my blog so keep your eyes open and tuned-in for all the latest!

Interview

I recently gave an interview for another photography blog. It is in English but if you are interested here is the link. Interview with Michael Breitung

Hope you have fun watching my photos!

Anne-Marie is an artist that draws the viewer into her images and captivates their senses with a finesse of colour and style!

Our 63rd featured artist can be described as a regular gal with a passion for photography! Anne-Marie known on flickr as bleuet / Anne-Marie, is an artist that draws the viewer into her images and captivates their senses with a finesse of color and style. A perfect source of inspiration, this is one artist definitely not to be missed.

Ré Création

“Hello, my name is Anne-Marie. I live between Bordeaux and the Arcachon Basin in South West of France.
I bought my first camera (Minolta XG-M) with my first salary and it’s still in order. I really became a serial shooter with my first digital camera 6 years ago.

Seascapes are my favorite subjects. I adore walking by the ocean or the Arcachon Basin at sunset or at the blue hour : it makes me feel optimistic. I also love shooting cityscapes at night because of the atmosphere ; animals (especially funny birds), children…

A dear friend of mine taught me how to take long exposures and I’m now playing with my ND filters like a kid with a toy.

I would like to try other subjects like misty landscapes, portraits in B&W and chiaroscuro, architecture… The most difficult for me is to take candid shots because it seems to me I’m steeling a bit of people’s life… but I want to learn that too.

Photo is a fantastic way to meet people you would never have heard of, and to discover other ways of living and thinking. I’m always amazed when I wander in this group’s fantastic images : they make me dream, learn and want to progress. Thank you all for that ! :-) ”.

Introducing the incredible work of Scott Masterton, exploring the beauty of our planet through photography!

Introducing our 157th featured artist, Scott Masterton from North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland! Skimmimg through his images I’m sure you will all agree Scott is a born artist with a deep love and appreciation of the beauty of the world around him! With a natural talent like his coupled with a true passion for nature one can imagine the high quality, reliable photography that Scott puts out with each and every shot! Below is but a small sampling of the incredible work of Scott Masterton!

Contemplation

I love exploring the beauty of our planet through photography and am endeavouring to add images showing the beauty of nature to the planetary photostream. I especially enjoy how the act of taking photos anchors you in the here and now, heightening the senses and enhancing the moment…. it makes me feel alive.

My particular interest is in landscapes, often minimalist. I enjoy the empty places of our fascinating and beautiful world. I find light fascinating, particularly its interaction with time, and long exposure work often features in my images. Mostly though, I like color and my shots reflect what I feel I saw, and experienced, at the moment of capture.

I used to be a trout fisherman, something I’ve all but given up, and I find landscape photography to be a very similar pursuit… The best times are around sunrise and sunset, you get out and enjoy nature, you never know what you might catch, and there is always the one that you almost caught that got away!

I get a lot of pleasure from looking at the work of other photographers around the world who share their work and let me see places and light that I will never have time to see myself… I was born and bred in Scotland, a country I love, and I try to share the beauty of my country in return.

Finally I like to travel and have some fun with my photography and that’s where my little friend Hamish helps me out.

Lawrence Neo is an outstanding nature photographer where art, nature and beauty all come together!

Lawrence Neo is our 155th featured artist,  an outstanding nature photographer where nature, art and beauty all come together! Lawrence specializes in bird photography and his photo-style is just amazing, every photo is a carefully composed work of art. Beginning as a hobby Lawrence has since dedicated much of his time both home and abroad in search of exotic birds and believe me he has amassed quite a collection for every interest! Every species is also carefully documented and presented in sets by region and species! Have a wander through his stream and you’ll see what I mean. Even if you don’t know much about nature and wildlife photography you’ll soon be enthralled and inspired by Lawrence’s captures!

Lawrence-Neo_2011_07_21_0037

Artist’s statement:

I am residing at a small city nation at the southern tip of Malay Peninsula, Singapore. I started photographing birds as an hobby three years back after looking some stunning photos taken by my friends at our parks. Since then, I have spent all my spare time walking every spot of our parks and natural reserves at our neighboring country, Malaysia, searching for beautiful birds. Recently, I even traveled to Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand, in search of exotic birds.
I also started to study the identity of the individual bird, its origin, its natural habitats and its behavior, etc. While waiting for the decisive moments, I began to observe, learn and appreciate how the individual bird interacts with its own species, other animals and nature. How the individual bird changes its behavior to adapt to the changing environments.
I enjoy sharing my favorite photos through Flickr and learn a lot from the master photographers who share their photos and knowledge.

Best regards,
Lawrence Neo

Magda Indigo is a talented and versatile photographer who does not fit into just one little box!

Our 16th feature is a talented and versatile photographer who does not fit into just one little box.

4244129399_7c06f0c91e_o

Magda Indigo talks about herself and photography:

“I am a Belgian, born in Bruges, Flanders, who happily lives in the UK with my husband, fellow photographer Paul Indigo. Contrary to what many think: I AM NOT A FLOWER PHOTOGRAPHER! Just A photographer, a passionate and intuitive photographer, this on here is my fun, my freedom.

Photography is a way of life for me. Being creative is not a choice… it is an urge in me…. I can forget the world, time, food, drink or sleep when I am in that mode…

Photography for me is ALL about light, creativity, beauty and EMOTION, not only technical prowess, a ‘perfect’ image without creativity or emotion is just a ‘picture’.

Knowledge comes mostly with time, curiosity, a hunger for learning and lots of experimenting. And now in the digital age, many of the ‘skills’ and attributes seem to have been forgotten! It took me over 15 years to achieve the image that was behind my eyes and see it in front of them!!!

I take my studio black-background shots on Hasselblad, digital back, with extension tubes, lot of different light-sources, our Godard light-boxes (I do not use them here as flash-lights), snouts, honeycomb, flags, cutters and gobos, reflectors of all kinds, I mean, a piece of white foam, a sheet of silver, they all reflect. It DOES NOT HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE… Be creative even there! I prefer comp made IN CAMERA! My camera HAS to be my friend from day one (same for the lenses!), I MUST like the feel of it, not too light for more stability. Do not like tripods (except in studio), my main dislike is FLASH. We all have our preferences but if you are a good photographer who has learned the skill and knows what he’s doing… you can do EVERYTHING! If it is to help young photographers, I think this will be representative.

If you have any questions just write and ask! We like to help. I’m a humble and quite shy person, however the facts are, because we are pro’s, we have, over the years, accumulated equipment and knowledge that most ‘enthusiasts” do not have access to (and don’t need to). Regards, Magda” (*_*)
